Trending

If you read our lists of the fastest-trending cannabis strains in 2017 and 2016, you know that trends change fast in the US’s fastest-growing industry. Still, key takeaways can be gleaned from the data:

Non-consumable items account for a huge proportion of trending products. Nearly 50% of states were interested in vaporizers, bubblers, glass rigs, and the like.

Vape pen cartridges are widely loved. More than 20% of states’ fastest-trending products were vaporizer carts.

States with limited access to cannabis are interested in older products. For instance, in Iowa and Kansas—both with no legalization measures on the books—the PAX 2 was trending faster than the newer PAX 3.

Many states were looking for products available in neighboring states, or in the largest markets. Utah, for instance, was interested in items from neighboring Colorado, while many states were checking out California products (perhaps to keep an eye on trends, or in anticipation of the Golden State’s recreational market opening in 2018).

While edibles make up a big portion of legal sales, edibles products were rarely fastest-trending. This may be because people can make their own edibles, while items like cartridges are hard to DIY.

Even though many states below have not yet legalized cannabis, people within their borders still want to learn about their options, meaning that the data still can provide valuable information for future reference—particularly in states where cannabis markets may open within the next year.
